Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) has awarded five-year well maintenance rig contracts to Abraj Energy Services and Shalim Oil, reinforcing Oman’s commitment to operational efficiency, local expertise and sustainable growth in the energy sector.

Under the agreements, Abraj will provide nine rigs, while Shalim Oil will supply six. The contracts are expected to deliver 7% direct cost savings compared with existing contract prices, alongside a further 6% cost avoidance against market trends.

The initiative will also modernise PDO’s well maintenance fleet, with the share of modern rigs expected to increase from 40% to 53%. Importantly, six advanced rigs will be assembled in Oman, creating opportunities for technology transfer, technical skills development and greater participation by Omani SMEs.

This milestone highlights the growing importance of local partnerships, national workforce development and domestic supply-chain capabilities in strengthening Oman’s oil and gas industry. It also supports the broader objectives of Oman Vision 2040, particularly economic diversification, local content development and building a competitive energy sector.
