Waymo has revealed new details about the AI architecture behind more than 200 million fully driverless miles, offering a closer look at how autonomous vehicles are being trained, tested and validated for real-world operation.

Rather than relying on cameras alone, Waymo says its autonomous driving system combines cameras, lidar and radar. Each sensor plays a different role — from understanding traffic signs and signals to building 3D environmental maps and tracking the speed of surrounding objects.

The company has also moved away from numerous narrowly focused AI modules toward larger foundation models trained on extensive datasets. A separate validation layer checks proposed driving trajectories against physics and traffic rules before they are executed.

Another key part of the system is simulation. Waymo says it runs tens of billions of simulated miles, using closed-loop environments to recreate rare and dangerous scenarios that would be difficult to encounter frequently on public roads. Its automated “Critic” system continuously reviews driving behaviour and identifies situations for engineers to investigate.

Waymo is also using vision-language models built on Google’s Gemini for slower, high-level reasoning in unusual situations, while faster sensor-fusion systems handle immediate driving decisions.
The bigger takeaway is that autonomous driving is no longer simply about putting AI behind the wheel. It requires a continuous combination of sensor fusion, foundation models, simulation, validation, real-world data and safety governance.
