Apple’s new Mac mini models featuring the M6 and M5 Pro chips have a notable storage change: the NAND storage is soldered directly to the logic board. Unlike the previous M4 and M4 Pro models, the new machines do not support aftermarket internal SSD upgrades.

MacRumors also reports that the 256GB configuration uses a single NAND chip, resulting in substantially lower benchmarked read/write speeds than the 512GB models. Testing cited by MacRumors recorded around 3,217 MB/s read and 3,000 MB/s write for the 256GB M6 model, compared with about 6,372 MB/s read and 6,577 MB/s write for the 512GB version.
