Oman is strengthening its ambition to develop locally relevant technologies and build a competitive, innovation-driven economy. Omantel has launched its first centralised and structured Research & Development (R&D) function, creating a pathway to transform promising ideas into market-ready solutions and commercially viable opportunities.
The initiative focuses on four strategic areas: networking and connectivity, enterprise and the Internet of Things (IoT), generative AI, and AI infrastructure. Omantel is also expanding collaboration with the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (MIT CSAIL), Sultan Qaboos University, Oman College of Health Sciences, and Modern College of Business and Science to connect academic research with industry requirements.
Building on its Innovation Labs and engagement with Omanโs startup ecosystem, Omantel aims to strengthen local capabilities, encourage experimentation and develop solutions relevant to Oman and the wider region. The company also plans to publish a research white paper on generative AI infrastructure by the end of 2026, examining how Omanโs strategic location and digital capabilities could support next-generation AI and cloud infrastructure.
This initiative represents an important step towards developing technology in Omanโnot simply adopting itโand supports the objectives of Oman Vision 2040 for a knowledge-based, technology-enabled economy.
