Oman is strengthening its sustainable energy capabilities through new research infrastructure and specialised professional training. Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) has inaugurated its Sustainable Energy Research Centre Laboratory, developed through a strategic partnership with Oxy Oman with an investment of approximately RO1.5 million. Covering around 774 square metres, the facility supports research into alternative fuels, energy materials, energy efficiency, thermal energy, carbon capture, utilisation and storage, hydrogen, smart grids and renewable energy systems. Alongside the laboratory opening, SQU and the Ministry of Energy and Minerals, represented by the Oman Sustainability Centre, signed a three-year agreement for the second phase of the Kafa’a programme. The initiative aims to train 275 participants in energy auditing and 20 in measurement and verification, while supporting at least three national teams to develop energy-efficiency solutions and establish specialised startups. By connecting academic research, industry collaboration and practical workforce development, these initiatives can help improve energy efficiency, reduce emissions, create business opportunities and advance Oman Vision 2040 and the national net-zero emissions target for 2050.
