Omanโs energy sector is entering a new era of digital transformation as Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) launches its Autonomous Production Programme, a Digital Twin project and its first agentic AI initiatives. Announced at PDOโs Autonomous and Digital Transformation Day in Muscat, these initiatives aim to move operations from reactive problem-solving towards predictive, data-driven and increasingly autonomous decision-making.
The programme combines artificial intelligence, real-time analytics, advanced process control, drones and robotics, while digital twins will connect physical assets with live operational data to improve visibility and maintenance planning. PDO is also extending its ADAM AI assistant to support decisions and perform defined tasks within established governance and control frameworks.
A key milestone is the five-year strategic partnership with SLB and Halliburton to advance digital well construction through seven integrated digital capabilities. The partnership also includes training, graduate opportunities and knowledge transfer to strengthen Omani talent. In parallel, PDOโs collaboration with local company Onsor Technology supports the adoption of locally developed computing devices.
These developments represent an important opportunity for Oman to strengthen industrial efficiency, safety, local technology capabilities and innovation in line with Oman Vision 2040. The next key measure will be how effectively these technologies translate into measurable operational improvements.
